Water lilies have different meanings depending on where you are in the world, but they have special significance in Buddhism and Hinduism. For these religions, the water lily symbolizes resurrection, because these flowers close up at night and reopen in the morning, similar to a spiritual rebirth. Buddhists also believe that the water lily represents enlightenment because a beautiful bloom can emerge from the mud.
A Native American legend says that the water lily was once a star. It fell from the sky, into the water and it changed into a flower. The Roman writer Pliny the Elder wrote that water lilies were an antidote for magic love potions.
