The daisy purportedly gets its name from the Old English phrase “daes eage” or “day’s eye” since the flower closes its petals at night and reopens them at dawn while facing/following the sun.
The meaning of a daisy flower can be new beginnings, joy and cheerfulness. In the Victorian Era, daisies symbolized loyalty and an ability to keep things secret. According to a tale in Celtic mythology, whenever an infant passes away, God would sprinkle daisies across the earth to console the grieving family. In Norse mythology, the daisy is known as the sacred flower for the goddess of love, beauty and fertility (Freya), because of this, daisies symbolize childbirth, motherhood and new beginnings.
